Describe your design style in 3 words: Honest, human-centered, and enduring.

My design icon: Charles and Ray Eames.

Who would you most like to collaborate with on a project? I’m interested in collaborating with those who want to challenge the status quo. I believe in pushing the boundaries and looking outside the traditional design profession for inspiration.

Fill in the blank, no space is complete without: the people who use the space.

What project are you most proud of? There are really 2 projects that I have been very proud to have been a part of: Banner Good Samaritan Outpatient Specialty Building in Phoenix because of the amazing process and team that had a goal to “create the visionary place to be healed”. The second was the East Pavilion at Northwest Community Hospital in suburban Chicago. It was a highly collaborative team and our client continually pushed for innovation. It was so meaningful to see their reaction when their building opened.

What are your must read design blogs? Truthfully, I’m not much of a blog reader but I do like Transmaterial.net as a great resource for inspiration and innovation in materiality; talkcontract covers a wide range of topics related to design

Why Interior Design? The opportunity (and obligation) we have as Interior Designers is to shape spaces that truly influence people’s lives. Healthcare in particular, allows designers to impact the healing and caregiving process significantly.

How would you define your personal style? Intentional, caring, curious

How did you convince your parents you wanted to be an Interior Designer? I started out in college as a Pharmacy major. After my freshman year, I announced to my parents that I was changing my major to Interior Design. Needless to say they were surprised and didn’t quite know what to think. But they trusted my judgment and have seen how fulfilling Interior Design is as a career choice.

3 things I can’t live without: my garden, my family and good coffee!

Why IIDA? I appreciate the focus on commercial design.

My design icon: Richard Meier

Who would you most like to collaborate with on a project? My Client.

Fill in the blank, no space is complete without: the client.

What project are you most proud of? I am proud of all of my projects. No single one jumps to the front BUT I must say I have the most satisfaction with the low budget projects that challenge us to be most creative and strategic in our design.

What are your must read design blogs? DesignWire, Interior Design

Why Interior Design? This is a profession that combines creativity, innovation, functionality, and the pushing of boundaries through knowledge, collaboration and strategic thinking resulting in environments for our clients that exceed their expectations and understanding of our profession.

How would you define your personal style? Thoughtful, detailed, not afraid.

How did you convince your parents you wanted to be an Interior Designer? My father was an engineer and my mother a librarian – both supporters of the arts & culture. I started out studying architecture, but upon graduating transitioned to interior design for commercial interiors loving the challenges.

3 things I can’t live without: Barolo, trace paper, blackberry/smart phone

Why IIDA? I started out with IIDA to meet people & network. Over the past 10 years IIDA has given me a platform to give back to the industry through legislation, mentoring, networking, etc (and leading by example)

Describe your design style in 3 words: Sophisticated, User-centric and Eclectic.

My design icon: Charles and Ray Eames - Their collective works are simply amazing.

Who would you most like to collaborate with on a project? The many talented designers and architects I work with at Gensler. There is such a deep breadth of knowledge.

Fill in the blank, no space is complete without: Lighting design. Light or dark, contrast is the key to creating interest. Lighting can make or break a project.

What project are you most proud of? It’s impossible to name just one. I am proud of having the opportunity to work on projects that positively alter the way people live and work.

What are your must read design blogs? core77; Design Sponge; design milk; decore8

Why Interior Design? I found that all too often spaces were designed/built with no attention to detail, aesthetics, or the ultimate effect the space would have on its users. I believe design has the power to change lives. The power to help us reach our full potential. I started in design to help bring about change; to improve they way we work, live and view the world.

How would you define your personal style? Eclectic and modern.

How did you convince your parents you wanted to be an Interior Designer? They were never consulted. I was always into learning how things were built, and always wanted to create solutions that would make life easier. That interest in design and my concern for others eventually led me to ID.

3 things I can’t live without: My daughter, my wife and Starbucks

Why IIDA? The power of design defines a large part of my believe system. I believe that design has the power to change lives. It has the power to help people rise above and do remarkable things. Design inspires, design can be the driving force, the goal, or the agent of change in many ways. The power of design is limitless . IIDA gives this vision a voice.

“I AM IIDA because I believe in the power of design."
